The Records Division of the Huntsville Police Department is an essential part of the department’s every day function.  The areas and extensions of this division assist with the overall productivity of the law enforcement process.  The Records Division is a 24/7 operation and accessible to the public during regular business hours.  The support personnel in this area maintain and produce police related documents for review by various entities.  The Records Division consists of two main areas: technical and clerical.  The Evidence Room and Alarm Unit are an extension of the Records Division and are located in the same facility.

The technical area is comprised of the Identification Section, and is responsible for all tasks regarding examinations for identification purposes.  This area includes Fingerprint Technicians and one Latent Examiner/Identification Supervisor.  The clerical area is mainly responsible for data entry and interacting with the public.  This area includes Records Clerks and three Records Supervisors.  The Evidence Room is responsible for securing submitted evidence for court purposes and includes two property custodians.  The Alarm Unit is responsible for issuing licenses/permits for securities and includes one alarm coordinator.

The Records Division maintains criminal history files on anyone arrested by the department, with a current total of 145,800 files. In addition, the section maintains all traffic accident reports (approximately 12,000 per year) and all crime reports, which number more than 24,000 a year and 18,000 arrest reports.
