HPD Is Recruiting Experienced Officers

Huntsville, Alabama (August 10, 2006) The Huntsville Police Department is looking to recruit approximately 27 men and women with previous law enforcement experience. The Department is taking applications until Monday, August 28, 2006 for the next Lateral Police Academy.  Lt. Ken Brooks, Director of the Police Academy says this is the most ambitious effort to date to recruit experienced law enforcement personnel who are attracted by the Department’s salaries and opportunities for advancement. Brooks said, “We recruit heavily where officers have experience.  They are able to hit the streets quicker and their years in service place them at an advantage for assignments in specialized units.” Candidates who are accepted in the Lateral Academy and who are certified to meet a 10 point criteria established by the Alabama Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission (A.P.O.S.T.C.) are also eligible to start at a higher than entry level rate of pay.

Police Chief Rex Reynolds has spoken with other  law enforcement agencies across the country that are all competing on a federal, state and local level to hire good men and women without lowering standards. Reynolds said, “Our standards are high and demanding, but the rewards are outstanding. We are an accredited law enforcement agency and applicants have to pass a Video Entrance Exam, psychological evaluation, physical agility test and background checks, so if a candidate has three or more years of continuous experience in law enforcement they should consider applying.” There is a tentative date to start the next Lateral Academy scheduled for December 4, 2006. The academy is 9 weeks with an additional 9 weeks with an experienced Field Training Officer.
