Huntsville Police Prepare For Hispanic March, May 1st         

Huntsville, Alabama (April 24, 2006) Organizers for a Hispanic demonstration in Huntsville May 1st say they anticipate 500 to 5,000 in Huntsville that day. The event is part of a nation-wide movement to draw attention to immigration issues pending at the White House.

 Special Operations Commander, Captain Henry Reyes said the department will handle the demonstration as they would normal parades, providing security and traffic control.  Streets will be closed and barricades set up to provide safety for the demonstrators. Reyes said Community Relations Officers are also notifying downtown business owners in advance of the planned demonstration.

 Route: The event will start and finish at VBCC Lot V (old Meadow Gold) on Clinton Avenue. Assembly time 12:30 p.m. The route will move eastbound on Clinton Avenue southbound on Jefferson Street, right onto Williams Avenue. The route will continue onto Monroe Street in front of the VBCC, westbound back onto Clinton Avenue. The assembly is scheduled to end at 3:30 p.m. In a cooperative effort, the Madison County Sheriff’s Department will also assist with traffic and security around the courthouse.

 Parking: Parking lot K on Clinton Avenue will be the primary parking lot used by organizers.
