Huntsville Police Department Announce Memorial Day Safety Mobilization
“Click it or Ticket”
Huntsville, Alabama (May 21st 2010) In 2008, 12,671 passenger vehicle occupants died in motor vehicle crashes nationwide in the nighttime hours between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Nearly 64% of those who died were not wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crashes, compared to less than 45% of the passenger vehicle occupants killed during the daytime hours of 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. NHTSA estimated over 13,250 lives were saved nationwide in 2008 by the use of safety belts with over 400 lives in Alabama being saved.
The Huntsville Police Department will be joining hundreds of law enforcement officials, highway safety representatives and safety advocates nationwide who have vowed support of the annual mobilization. High visibility enforcement efforts such as “Click it or Ticket” are credited with the increasing national seatbelt usage rate from 58% in 1994 to an observed usage rate of 84% in 2009.
With NHTSA grant money for overtime, HPD will be placing officers out in force during this blitz period in all three precincts in an effort to educate the public on the necessity of seatbelt compliance. Motorists should be prepared for stepped up Click it or Ticket enforcement activities throughout Huntsville which will take place around the clock beginning May 24 through Memorial Day and ending on June 6.
Remember both drivers and passengers are required by law to be buckled up and both can be cited for non-compliance to this State law.
