Thirty-six DUI arrests made over New Year’s Weekend
Huntsville, Alabama (January 6, 2009) Huntsville Police Chief Henry Reyes announced that thirty-six people were arrested and charged with Driving Under the Influence during the five day New Year’s Holiday Weekend. This is up from last year’s twenty-three arrests for the same weekend. Sgt. Floyd Smith from the HPD’s DUI Task Force stated that one reason for the increase was the extended weekend which was one day longer this year due to how the holiday fell in the week. Another reason was the concentration of checkpoints which were set up in areas which statistically have shown to have experienced the highest amounts of DUI related accidents during the previous year. These “Hot Spots” are designated areas for concentrated radar and DUI enforcement provided by the Northeast Alabama Traffic Safety Office (NATSO).
Chief Reyes also points out that strong Public Service Announcements (PSA’s) from NATSO throughout the year relating to specific traffic enforcement campaigns such as “Click it or Ticket”, “Take Back our Highways” and “Over the Limit, Under Arrest” have played an important role in educating motorists and reducing accidents. These federal grants paid by the NATSO have placed officers on the street enforcing traffic laws which would not have been possible otherwise. Reyes added “we strongly believe these programs and our efforts by the Huntsville Police Department to eliminate targeted violations have had a positive impact on motorists driving habits and reduced accidents resulting in injuries and deaths.”
