Huntsville, Alabama (January 4, 2007) The Huntsville Police Departmentís Major Crimes Unit continue to investigate a traffic fatality early this morning, as a result of a police chase. Police spokesman Wendell Johnson said officers had a BOLO on January 3, 2007, from the Florence, Alabama P.D., for a silver or grey 4 door vehicle that was involved in a robbery to a game store in that city and other robberies in two other states.

North Precinct had an officer working a robbery detail and spotted a silver 4 door Altima in the parking lot of the Conoco at Mastin Lake and Jordan Lane. The officer saw 1 individual exit the vehicle but the car had tinted windows and he couldnít see inside. The Investigator called for a patrol car and officer to assist. As the vehicle left the parking lot, the patrol car tried to make a traffic stop on Mastin Lake Road.  Johnson said the vehicle fled east on Mastin Lake, south on Lodge and east on Grizzard. The driver lost control of the vehicle as he came over the hill and hit a telephone pole and burst into flames. Four Huntsville Police Officers rescued the driver, 20-year-old Brandon Derrail Shoulders who was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger, 23-year-old Jessica Nichole Sykes was also rescued transported to Huntsville Hospital and remains in critical condition.

Johnson said two other officers were injured in the pursuit when they crashed into each other when they were unable to stop before running into the rear of the lead police vehicle. The police cars were not involved in the wreck with the fleeing suspected vehicle.
