Sixteen People Arrested At Oakwood College Basketball Game

Huntsville, Alabama (December 10, 2007) Fifteen adults and 1 juvenile, were arrested and booked on various charges following a fight between two females after a basketball game at Oakwood College. Police spokesman Wendell Johnson said at 11:30 Saturday night, a Huntsville Police Officer working off-duty at the game arrested and charged an 18-year-old student with Disorderly Conduct. Johnson said as the Officer began to leave with the student in the back of the patrol car, an estimated crowd of several hundred people surrounded the vehicle and became very hostile. At 12:08 a.m., the Officer requested assistance. Johnson said Officers attempted to restore order by directing the crowd to disperse. Some individuals refused, others tried to incite the crowd by cursing and fighting with Officers.  Order was eventually restored and the crowd dispersed. Johnson said 16 individuals were arrested on various charges including Disorderly Conduct, Resisting Arrest, and Harassment, while four individuals were charged with Felony Assault for attacking Police Officers. The individuals were booked into the Madison County Metro Jail without further incident. Two Huntsville Police Officers suffered minor injuries. Johnson said the incident is being reviewed by Commanders to ensure compliance with Departmental Policy. Meanwhile Public Safety Director Rex Reynolds and Police Chief Henry Reyes are in communication with Oakwood College President, Dr. Delbert Baker and Chief of Public Safety and Transportation, Lewis Eakins concerning the incident.
