Lateral Program

Huntsville Police has a lateral entry program in effect for experienced law enforcement officers. The Lateral Entry Academy will be a shorter version of the Basic Recruit Academy due to the expected law enforcement knowledge of an experienced officer.

An Officer with 3-5 years of experience receives 1 step above the minimum pay and 5 or more years receives 2 steps above the minimum.

  1. There are several categories of law enforcement officers who may enter the Lateral Entry Academy:

    1. Alabama State Certified Law Enforcement Officer -

      Any officer certified by the Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission (A.P.O.S.T.C.) will be eligible for the Lateral Entry Academy providing they have satisfactorily met all of the Huntsville Police Department Police Officer Selection Process requirements.
       

    2. Out-of-State applicants -

      Must meet the A.P.O.S.T.C. minimum ten (10) point criteria in order to be considered for the Lateral Entry Academy.

    3. Military police applicants -

      Must meet the A.P.O.S.T.C. minimum ten (10) point criteria in order to be considered for the Lateral Entry Academy.

    4. Federal law enforcement applicants -

      Must meet the A.P.O.S.T.C. minimum ten (10)point criteria in order to be considered for the Lateral Entry Academy.



  2. The following ten (10) point criteria is applicable to Out-of-State, Military police, and Federal law enforcement applicants:


    1. Years of Law Enforcement Experience
      Less than 1 year0 points
      1 year to 5 years5 points
      5 years, 1 day to 10 years6 points
      10 years, 1 day to 15 years7 points
      15 years, 1 day to 20 years8 points
      20 years, 1 day or more9 points


    2. Basic Police Training
      Less than 280 hours0 points
      280 hours - 319 hours1 point
      320 hours - 479 hours2 points
      480 hours - 639 hours3 points
      640 hours - 800 hours4 points
      801 hours - 959 hours5 points
      960 hours or more6 points


    3. Post-Secondary Degrees
      Associate Degree1 point
      Bachelors Degree2 points
      Masters Degree or above3 points


      NOTE: Correspondence courses are not accepted.

       

  3. In addition to the ten (10) point minimum criteria, an applicant requesting entry into the Lateral Entry Program must meet the following requirements:

    1. Other State Applicants.

      Must possess a current and valid Peace Officers Standards and Training Certificate from the state the applicant received training. This certification of training must be issued after completing a basic police training course mandated by the State in which the officer was trained. This certification must meet the current National minimum curriculum hours standard adopted by the International Association of Directors of Law Enforcement Standards and Training. Applicant must not have had a break in service in excess of four (4) years following separation.

    2. Military Police Applicants.

      Be a graduate of a formal Military Police "Law Enforcement" Basic Police Training course. This certification must meet the current National minimum curriculum hours standard adopted by the International Association of Directors of Law Enforcement Standards and Training. Must have been performing duties in a law enforcement function the last four (4) years prior to separation and must not have a break in service in excess of four (4) years following military separation.

    3. Federal Law Enforcement Applicants.

      Be a graduate of a formal Federal Law Enforcement Basic Police Training course. This certification must meet the current National minimum curriculum hours standard adopted by the International Association of Directors of Law Enforcement Standards and Training. Must have been performing duties in a law enforcement function the last four (4) years prior to separation from Federal Service and must not have a break in service in excess of four (4) years following Federal Service separation.

    4. The following applicants will not be considered for eligibility:


      1. Applicants who do not meet A.P.O.S.T.C. standards for certification.
         
      2. Applicants who have been "Grandfathered" or "Exempted" from training.

      3. Applicants whose certification has been suspended or revoked.

      4. Applicants who have a primary Security Police occupational code.


  4. Applicants with prior law enforcement experience who qualify for the Lateral Entry Program must supply the following certified documentation from their department in order to be considered for employment.


    1. Copy of last two (2) performance evaluations.

      NOTE: If less than two (2) years, the last performance evaluation.

    2. A certified letter from the Commander of the Internal Affairs Division stating the number of citizen complaints against the applicant to include the disposition of the complaints. If no complaints have been made, the Commander must advise in the letter that the applicant has had no complaints.

    3. Copy of any disciplinary action taken against applicant.

    4. Copy of any commendations, awards, etc. awarded to applicant.

    5. Letter of recommendation by immediate supervisor.
